How to get a PAD out of Recovery Mode

In Recovery Mode, Apple devices are black and only show that they need to be connected to iTunes or a computer to function again.

If your PAD is stuck in recovery mode, follow the steps below to get your PAD back to normal:

  1. Turn off your iPad
  2. Make sure that your Mac and iTunes are up to date
  3. On a Mac with macOS Catalina: Use the magnifying glass icon on the top right to open the Finder.
On a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier/PC:  Open iTunes. If iTunes is already open on your Mac, you must close it and reopen it.
  4. Use a USB cable to connect your iPad to your computer
  5. Wait until you see the recovery mode screen while connected.
    • To activate the recovery mode screen, press and hold both the Home and top (or side) buttons simultaneously.

  6. Keep holding the button (or buttons) until you see the recovery mode screen:

  7. Now you are able to locate your iPad on your Mac.
    • On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later: The name of your connected device appears in the sidebar of Finder.
    • On a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier/Windows PC: iTunes will display the icon of your connected device in the upper-left corner.
  8. When you see the option to Restore or Update, choose Update. Wait while your computer downloads the iPad software. If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your iPad exits the recovery mode screen, let the download finish, then repeat step 4.
  9. Once your iPad has been updated or restored, set it up.
